July 12, 2016 – The International Fire Marshals Association’s (IFMA) Percy Bugbee Award was presented to Steven Sawyer, Fire Code Regional Director for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Executive Secretary of IFMA at the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas. The award, only the ninth given since its inception in 1969, was presented to Sawyer on June 12, 2016 at the section reception event.
The award was established in honor of Percy Bugbee, who served NFPA in many capacities from first field engineer to honorary chairman of the Board of Directors, to recognize a person who’s significant and enduring contributions to public safety are in keeping with IFMA’s highest traditions. Bugbee dedicated more than 40 years supporting the objectives of IFMA to promote the science and improve the methods of fire protection and fire prevention, and to enlist members’ cooperation in establishing proper safeguards against loss of life and property by fire.
In line with Mr. Bugbee’s mission, Sawyer has dedicated more than 40 years of his life to various levels of the fire service, protecting citizens of his home area as well as beyond by sharing his vast firefighting skills, his knowledge of codes and standards, and teaching others about fire safety in general. Sawyer is an active member of North Stonington (Conn.) Volunteer Fire Co., Inc., previously serving as deputy chief. Sawyer served for eight years as Deputy Fire Marshal for Yale University.
Sawyer has been with NFPA for over 20 years, serving in various departments, such as the Public Fire Protection Division where he staffed numerous fire service standards, including deployment, fire service training, and community risk reduction, to name a few. Sawyer has served as the IFMA Executive Secretary since 1998. Through his vision, leadership and dedication, he has supported the goals and objectives of IFMA and the fire prevention community.
IFMA President Steve Peavey said, “On behalf of the more than 1,800 members worldwide of the International Fire Marshals Association, we would like to congratulate Steven F. Sawyer for his notable, significant and enduring contributions to fire safety.”
